چکیده

One of the main challenges faced by peer-topeer (P2P) video-on-demand (VoD) systems is their ability, or lack thereof, to provide VCR functionality (e.g. random jump operations). Such jump operations can have special impact in the server load during flash crowd events, since the server is the only node in the system with a full copy of the video. Currently, there is little knowledge of the impact that such VCR operations can have in the swarm efficiency (and therefore in the playout rate and start-up delay), as well as in the server’s load under different jumping and arrival patterns. In fact, existing state-of-the-art approaches rely mostly on highly over-provisioned peers and servers to absorb such jumping operations. In this paper, we provide the first evaluation of the impact that VCR operations can have on P2P VoD systems for various arrival and viewing patterns. We provide both analytical evidence and experimental results. To better evaluate the impact of these patterns, we have built a system called Kangaroo, which provides advanced DVD-like features, namely arbitrary forward/backward jumps, using an entirely mesh-based network. The system achieves its goals through a combination of carefully designed mechanisms, including proper block scheduling algorithms and peerneighborhood topology management. We also study how viewing patterns affect the performance of the system and use traces captured from a live VoD system, to characterize the performance of the system under realistic workloads.

Providing VCR in a Distributed Client Collaborative Multicast Video Delivery Scheme

In order to design a high scalable video delivery technology for VoD systems, two representative solutions have been developed: multicast and P2P. Each of them has limitations when it has to implement VCR interactions to offer true-VoD services. With multicast delivery schemes, part of system resources has to be exclusively allocated in order to implement VCR operations, therefore the initial V...

Optimising upload bandwidth for quality of VCR operations in P2P VoD systems

Many P2P VoD systems have been proposed, but only few can support VCR operations. Most of the works require very well provisioned source servers to guarantee the quality. The challenge is to do the same without requiring well provisioned source servers. In this paper, we take the heterogeneity of bandwidth into consideration, and also consider the practical case in which the capacity of the str...

Optimize Prefetching in P2P VoD systems

In Peer-to-Peer Video on Demand system free VCR-like operations are very frequent. The uncertainty of frequent VCR operations makes it difficult to provide play as download services. To address this problem, we propose Optimize prefetching for Peer-to-Peer Video-on-Demand systems. Through simulation results, we demonstrate that the proposed prefetching scheme

A Novel Caching Strategy in Video-on-Demand (VoD) Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Networks Based on Complex Network Theory

The popularity of video-on-demand (VoD) streaming has grown dramatically over the World Wide Web. Most users in VoD P2P networks have to wait a long time in order to access their requesting videos. Therefore, reducing waiting time to access videos is the main challenge for VoD P2P networks. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for caching video based on peers' priority and video's popula...

COOCHING: Cooperative Prefetching Strategy for P2P Video-on-Demand System

Most P2P VoD schemes focused on service architectures and overlays optimization without considering segments rarity and the performance of prefetching strategies. As a result, they cannot better support VCR-oriented services. Despite the remarkable popularity in VoD systems, there exists no prior work that studies the performance gap between different prefetching strategies. In this paper we an...
